There is one major factor that will alter the house edge of any Blackjack game and that is the game rules! It sounds simple but even what appears on the surface to be a little change in the rules can have a dramatic effect on the house edge.

So to give you an insight into what rule changes will do what to the house edge we have compiled the following section, be aware this is based on changes to a game that is using eight full decks of playing cards and in game where the Dealer always hits a soft 17, and one where a player can double down on the first two cards dealt, and also after they have split cards, and one which lets you split to make a total of 4 separate hands.

Positive House Edge Rule Variations
In Blackjack games where a Blackjack pays 2 to 1 then there will be a drop in the House Edge of 2.27% When you get an instant win for a Five Card Charlie then the house edge is dropped by 1.46%.

A game that offers a payout of 2-1 for a suited Blackjack will drop the house edge by 0.57%. Some games will give you an instant winning hand should you get a total of 21, the house edge will be dropped by 0.54% when this rule is in operation.

Some games offer Early Surrender if it is offered against a Dealers Ace the house edge is dropped by 0.39% and if offered against a Dealers ten then the drop in House Edge is 0.24%.

There are a few Blackjack variants that will pay 2-1 once you get 21 with 5 or more cards, such games benefit from a drop in house edge of 0.24% thanks to this rule.

If the rules say you can double down on any number of cards then you are looking at a drop in the house edge of 0.23%. The majority of games won't class an Ace and a Ten valued card as a Blackjack hand, instead they will classify if as a 21 hand. If it is classed as a Blackjack hand then the drop in the house edge is 0.19%.

If the game rules let you draw to a split Ace then there is a small drop in the house edge of 0.19%. If you are deemed an instant winner with a Six card Charlie then the house edge is dropped by 0.16%.

If the Blackjack game offers you the ability to take Double Down Rescue then this rule drops the house edge by 0.10%. Plus if you are allowed to resplit Aces then the house edge drop is 0.08%. Late Surrender that is offered against a Dealers Ten is worth a lower house edge of 0.07%.

If a Blackjack game pays 3-1 for getting three 7's then that games' house edge is dropped by 0.05% or if three 7's pays instantly 2-1 the house edge drop is 0.03%. A Seven Card Charlie instant win rule knocks just 0.01% off the games house edge.
