When you play Blackjack you want your game to be both entertaining and profitable, playing to lose is for dummies but time and time again you will see players making all manner of mistakes when playing.

These mistakes are too numerous to mention but one that is commonplace is to stand a hand at the wrong time, so let us now take a look at standing a hand in a bit more detail so you never fall into the dummy category of player!

If you are new to Blackjack then you need to know first and foremost that when you Stand a hand (sometimes known as Sticking) you will let the dealer know that you wish to be dealt no further cards and as such he will move onto another player and your hand will remain as it is.

But when is the best time to Stand? Well this of course depends on the type of Blackjack game you are playing and the strength of both your hand and the Dealers upcard.

In a single deck game for example there are several times when you should always stand your hand irrespective of what the Dealer is holding, these are when you are holding either a hard 17, 18, 19 or 20, or a soft 18 or 19 or a pair of 10's. If you are holding these then always stand.

Another time when you should always stand your hand in a single deck game is when you have a pair of nines and you are looking at a dealers upcard of a ten or an ace, don't be tempted to split them as the correct move to make is to stand that hand.

One of the trickiest calls to make is when you have a poor hand such as a 13, 14, 15 or 16 when the dealer is holding either a 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. In a single deck game you may be surprised to know that faced with such a situation the best move to make is to stand your hand, so don't tempt fate by hitting it!

Finally let us take a look at a dismal hand to have and that is when you have been dealt a hand totalling twelve, you should, on a single deck game, hit this hand unless the dealer is holding a 4, 5 or a 6, if so then standing your hand is the correct move to make.

There are a few other times when you should stand your hand and you should grab yourself a Strategy Card for whichever variant you are playing as this will always let you know when to stand and are invaluable to new players.

Next time you sit down to play you will see players standing hands which don't follow the correct strategy, ocasionally they will win but in the long term they are going to come unstuck by virtue of the game odds, so learning the correct time to stand will save you money and instantly improve your chances of a winning hand.
