There are several occasions when you might here the word "Charlie" in Blackjack, and this refers to a hand or hands that manages to get to a certain number of cards without busting.

When a player manages to achieve this then his hand will automatically win, irrespective of what the Dealer is showing.

For example a Five Card Charlie is when the total count of all the cards in your hands is not over 21. You could get dealt a Six Card Charlie or indeed a 7 Card Charlie.

Mathematically it is possible to get up to a Ten Card Charlie, however such circumstances are very rare indeed but they can and do happen.

Not all casinos will automatically class a Charlie hand as an automatic winner, so you will have to do some research when looking for such venues, but when you find one they will have a dramatic affect of the house edge and will lower it significantly.

If you get an automatic win on a 7 Card Charlie hand then this will lower the house edge by 0.01%, not what you may call dramatic but any lowering of the dreaded house edge is a good thing.

However a 6 Card Charlie rule will lower the house edge by 0.16% and a 5 Card Charlie win rule will drop the house edge by a much larger 1.46%. So over the long term it can only help your cause by playing at venues that offer this player advantageous ruling.

Blackjack Strategy for Charlie Rules
When playing a Blackjack variant that allows for the Charlie wins rule you should play a slightly different Strategy to when the rules do not give you an instant win, so below you will find a quick round up.

If you are holding a hand with a total of 4 - 11 and the Dealer is holding 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or an Ace you should always Hit that hand.

You do the same if you have a hand totalling 12, unless the Dealer has a 4, 5, or 6, in this circumstance if you are one or two cards away from a Charlie you should Hit, if not then you should stand that hand.

If you hand totals 13 and the Dealer has 2 or 3 and you are one or two away from a Charlie then Hit, otherwise stand. If the Dealer has 4, 5 or 6 and you have 13 then hit your hand if you are one away from a Charlie if not then Stand. If the Dealer is holding anything else then always hit your hand.

Should you be holding 14, 15 or 16 and the Dealer has 7, 8, 9, 10 or an Ace then you should Hit your hand. If the Dealer has anything else then you must hit your hand if you are one away from a Charlie, unless you have 16 to a Dealers 4, 5 or 6 if so then you should stand your hand.

If you have a hand of 17, 18, 19, 20 and the Dealer is showing 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or an Ace then you should stand.
